Smaller Government, Lower Taxes, More Freedom. If those three things don’t frighten you consider re-considering your political affiliation. If you call yourself a Democrat or Republican neither of your parties are fully embracing personal liberty. Over the last few years my party of choice seems to have abandoned much of what they once stood for, lower taxes, smaller government and a social view consistent with my own.
It took some time but slowly I’ve come to the realization that personal liberty is far more important than any ideology because without that liberty you’re simply handing over a portion of your existence to another being/affiliation. While I don’t agree with every position the Libertarian party stands for, I feel more at ease to disagree with those issues than any other party could ever afford me.
But “Libertarians never get more than a few percent of the total vote, don’t you feel like you’re throwing your vote away?” If a Republican or Democrat candidate doesn’t fully embrace liberty, picking the lesser of two evils will never change that fact. Or in other words, I’m still free to vote for whomever I wish, but if that candidate doesn’t fully embrace personal liberty whats the point? Voting for the “other guy” is the only way to throw your vote away.
I’m still wrestling with certain party stances but even in the ones I’m having trouble with, I can see a more clearly defined reasoning behind them than the “other” parties take. Or put another way, at least the logic is apparent and consistent. i.e. being lectured about animal rights from someone who doesn’t fully embrace human rights rings hollow. Perhaps I just had to bottom out with the “other” party, or maybe the cynic in me finally won out. I don’t fully understand it myself but I’m tired of those that scoff at the idea of self reliance, its as if they have a collective (no pun intended) amnesia of our last 200 years.
